‘HOME’WARD BOUND: March 2020

Coronavirus:

YOU Can Help Make a Difference NOW

Friends,

What began overseas in China as a rogue virus and worried few in the west is now knocking at our front door.  It’s the novel COVID-19, and it’s moving at a ridiculously fast speed. Should we worry?  What can we do?

In the wake this newly declared pandemic, I came across an article that I strongly recommend you read.  In his article “Coronavirus: Why You Must Act Now,” Tomas Pueyo makes a compelling argument based on data analysis and projection.  I like data and cold facts because media can hype things up sometimes and smear you with emotion and panic.  I want to know the real threat of the Coronavirus and, even better, I want to know what I can do to protect myself and others.

One of my greatest takeaways from the article is just how insidious the disease spreads.  Every day each state or country tallies how many more official cases are reported, but this number fails to tell the whole story.  Many, many more people have the disease but are either not yet showing symptoms or possibly, not getting tested because the symptoms are mild.

Pueyo estimates that, based on his calculations, a country like France which now claims over 5000 cases has an actual number that could be well over 100k.  The number of people impacted is way greater than what the official numbers show.

The net result:  the disease spreads like wildfire without really giving the impression that it’s burning down the forest.  By the time a country or state wakes up to this reality, the damage is done and strategy must change from containment to mitigation – such as we see in Italy.

So, what can we do on a personal level?  Pueyo’s solution is simple: Social Distancing.

Social distancing is staying your distance from others – about six feet.  Restricting unnecessary travel, going virtual with meetings, and limiting hospital visitations are other examples.  It might sound extreme now, but we only have to look at other countries in the world to be reminded that this isn’t fantasy – this is reality.

The time to practice social distancing?  NOW.  It might look silly not to shake hands or give hugs or to cancel group gatherings or holiday travel, but this is our best shot at slowing down the virus until a vaccine can be developed.  Together, we can slow the spread of the Coronavirus.  Will you act NOW?

Why I Support GRIP Outreach for YOUTH:

I first met Scott Grzesiak five years ago when I represented him in the purchase of a home. This friendship grew over time and, naturally, I came to hear of the awesome organization he leads: GRIP Outreach for Youth.

What I love about GRIP is that the Christian organization really does a phenomenal job mentoring high-school-aged youth. And, when I say “mentoring,” I mean stepping into their lives in a very personal way. GRIP’s staff and volunteers spend countless hours with the teenagers in their homes, schools, churches, and communities. Their goal is to break the fatherless cycle through Christ-centered, Life-on-Life relationships. The stories of transformed lives such as former gang members finding jobs, living productive lives, and even giving back to society, is truly astounding.

Being born and raised in Chicagoland, I take pride in supporting in any way that I can the good work these people do at GRIP. My team rallies around our annual goal of raising money and donating portions of our income to help high-school-aged youth in at-risk communities. My team and I are committed to providing outstanding results for buyers and sellers referred to us by our past clients. I have discovered that GRIP shares similar commitments to  Chicago’s youth. And, since their services survive on sponsorships and donations, we are happy to contribute and proud to support them.
